Why we choose Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed

A. nodosum, commonly know as egg-wrackis a brown seaweed with large swollen egg shaped air bladders at intervals along the middle of the frond. Its northern limits are the White Sea in the east and Baffin Island in the west. Southern distributions extend to northern Portugal and New Jersey. This marine macroalgae can grow up to 2 meters long and uses the air bladders to float to the surface at high tide and absorb sunlight. So why do we use this seaweed for health and nutrition?

It grows in abundance in the beautiful, pristine sea lochs in the Outer Hebrides in Scotland. This is where our harvester is located, driven along the lochs like a huge floating lawn mower! It simply chops the top 1-2 feet off the seaweed leaving the holdfast (like roots that stick the plant to the seabed rock). Ensuring the seaweed can re-grow is important for sustainable harvesting, we also won’t re-visit a site for 2 years after a harvest.

Special permission is granted from The Crown Estate for sustainable commercial harvest. This helps to ensure the practice is managed sustainably and with the approval of the relevant natural heritage authority, for example Natural England.

Seaweed for Health and Nutrition

Seaweed’s are most commonly know for being a source of iodine. However, with broader nutrition than land-plants, seaweed contains a huge range of minerals, trace elements, vitamin groups, amino acids and essential fatty acids as a foundation to a varied diet and healthy lifestyle. Egg-wrack in particular sits in-between high iodine species such as kelps and low iodine species such as red seaweeds. (what is the difference between kelp, seaweed, algae etc?)
