With broader nutrition than land-plants, seaweed contains a huge range of minerals, trace elements, vitamin groups, amino acids and essential fatty acids as a foundation to a varied diet and healthy lifestyle.

A Forgotten Food

Most cultures around the world have at some point in their history eaten and benefited from seaweed as a highly nutrient rich and sustainable resource. Research shows that at the time our early ancestors started to eat seaweed, around 2.5million years ago, there was the transition from primitive to intelligent modern Homo sapiens. It is stated that the required nutrients that were (and still are!) available in seaweeds, allowed for this evolution of the modern human brain. Of particular importance was seaweed’s rich source of iodine, essential for brain development.

The wide diversity of seaweed species means there is a wide diversity of iodine levels. It is essential to understand how much iodine you are getting, and this is why we use one specially selected species. Each batch, produced in our own International Patent Pending technologies, is tested for iodine levels. Furthermore, we test every batch using unique DNA Authentication in independent accredited laboratories, so you know you are getting exactly what we say it is!

the importance of iodine

Seaweed is naturally rich in iodine, an essential mineral that the body needs to make thyroid hormones. These hormones control the body’s metabolism and many other important functions. The body also needs thyroid hormones for brain development during pregnancy and infancy.

Our seaweed releases iodine more slowly, with longer retention in the body as compared to artificial sources (potassium iodide) often used in other supplementation. This was demonstrated in independent clinical trials.

sEAWEED COULD Address iodine deficiency

Seaweed is naturally rich in iodine, an essential mineral that the body needs to make thyroid hormones. These hormones control the body’s metabolism and many other important functions. The body also needs thyroid hormones for brain development during pregnancy and infancy.

Recent research shows the UK is one of just two high-income countries with iodine deficiency issues, and has a worse rate than developing countries such as South Sudan. Our seaweed releases iodine more slowly, with longer retention in the body as compared to artificial sources (potassium iodide) often used in other supplementation. This was demonstrated in independent clinical trials.

  • 66% of women have a diet insufficient in iodine
  • 76% of school-aged girls suffer from an iodine deficiency
  • 100% of our seaweed is measured for its iodine levels

We are passionate about the quality of our products and test our seaweed in Accredited UK laboratories for iodine levels, and aspects of safety and quality. Our very own Dr Craig Rose (aka Doctor Seaweed!) leads various research projects, and contributed to a research paper focusing on the different iodine contents between seaweed species.

Only seaweed with appropriate levels of iodine are selected for the products you can find in our Weed & Wonderful range.
