
Research indicates that people are still struggling to meet the necessary iodine intake for their health
A recent report from the Iodine Global Network has revealed the scale of iodine deficiency across Europe, concluding that over half of adults across the continent are suffering from dangerously low levels of iodine.[1]
This is worrying, as iodine is a key nutrient that is often overlooked. Research shows that the UK is one of just two high-income countries with iodine deficiency issues, despite the fact that iodine is vital for thyroid health – a key contributor to good digestion, heart health and metabolism.[2]

Infants in Europe are at severe risk of iodine deficiency
The Iodine Global Network estimates that as many as 50% of infants across Europe are at risk of being iodine deficient. Iodine issues in Europe have been well documented in recent years[3], but this data really shines a light on the need for viable iodine sources on the continental consumer market.
Regional Coordinator of the Iodine Global Network in Western and Central Europe, Dr Rodrigo Moreno-Reyes, explains the data in more detail, confirming that while it may seem that children are safe from iodine deficiency, the risk to their safety comes from the severely low levels of iodine impacting pregnant women.
Dr Moreno-Reyes comments: “If we look at the recent surveys, we see that all countries have iodine sufficiency in terms of children. But it’s different if you look at the adult population. 54% of countries reported low iodine among the adult population and 64% reported deficiency among pregnant women.”
Because pregnant women need more iodine in order to support both themselves and the foetus, the chance of iodine deficiency is much greater, increasing the risk to infants.[4]
The consequences and implications of iodine deficiency are both significant and severe
When iodine intake is low, the thyroid is stimulated, and this can increase the risk of thyroid disease for many millions of adults.[5] Research shows that iodine deficiency in pregnancy can lead to cognitive disorders, premature birth, and even miscarriage.[6]
Dr Moreno-Reyes explains both the moral and economic benefits of addressing iodine deficiency across the continent, stating: “Decreasing the incidence and prevalence of thyroid disease in Europe clearly makes economic sense in terms of the burden of disease. We need to put a focus on this as a health issue, as we have the data to support this case.”
Together with the World Iodine Association, Euthyroid and other organisations, the Iodine Global Network endorsed the Krakow Declaration in 2018[7], and called for Member States to work with the EU in 2020 to create a framework supporting optimal iodine intake.[8] At Seaweed & Co®, we strive to do our part to support the fight against iodine deficiency.
