Doctor Seaweed summarises interesting facts and figures about the paleo diet and the role of seaweed when it comes to what some consider ‘the healthiest way of eating!
So What is Paleo?
Let’s start from the very beginning … and I mean the beginning of times! The paleo diet means eating like we used to eat back in the day. In other words, if a caveman couldn’t have this food, you can’t either!
Lets imagine we live ten thousands years ago (pre-ready meals era!). So think of food you could hunt for or find elsewhere: fish, meats, greens, veggies and seeds. No sugar, no grains, no processed foods. That simple!
One of the main advantages stated of the ‘ancient’ way of eating is that you don’t have to count calories or constantly take into account the amount of nutrients consumed and yet you feel energetic, healthier and in fact loose weight according to ‘paleo’ people.
What is more, no ‘five times a day’ rule, just eat when you are hungry and be your organism’s best friend!
It is worth comparing humankind now and then: centuries ago people were muscular, tall and athletic whereas nowadays so many are overweight, unhappy, most of us lack of sleep and usually suffer from various diseases. How did we get there? For those keen on paleo, the answer can be expressed in one word – Agriculture! The reason is that we never really adjusted to eating grains that are farmed today. Another way of looking at is is to think of a 100-yard football field. 99.5 yards out of 100 would represent time we spend as hunters and gatherers. And the tiny half-yard would stand for agricultural revolution. That means, our genetics didn’t really shift, but our diets did.
Paleo advocators suggest trying this nutritional approach instead of reading about it, as they believe you’ll definitely feel the difference. And don’t forget that it’s not just another weight-loss programme, but a concept of eating healthy avoiding the foods that would wreck your natural digesting process.
Did you know Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Christina Aguilera, Novak Djokovic, Jessica Biel are sticking to a paleo diet?
Here are some tips and tricks on how to make paleo meals your everyday routine:
- Omelet for breakfast! Add broccoli, peppers and mushrooms. You may also consider using seaweed some seaweed!
- Salad with anything you like is a typical paleo lunch! Don’t forget spinach, carrots, avocados, and you could use nori seaweed instead of croutons as they are crispy yet are better for your health! Add some meat or seafood of choice.
- Berries or any other fruits will make a perfect desert.
Seaweed in Paleo Diets
So, how seaweed benefits paleo diets.
First of all, it goes without saying that one of the numerous seaweed benefits is salt replacement and adds flavour. Interestingly, the taste can still be great (assuming any salt is added to a paleo dish), and it is way healthier for you as seaweed boosts natural flavour of foods.
Second of all, seaweed was there for you more than three billion years ago, and archaeological evidence shows it was a part of cavemen’s diet.
Also, just an idea: why not swap potato chips on seaweed crisps? What a ‘paleo’ decision!
Therefore, sea veggies should be a huge part of your paleo plate, so you cannot overlook this superfood!
