Seaweed is a natural, incredibly healthy and sustainable food
Nutritionally, seaweed is unrivalled, providing multiple benefits as an ingredient in foods, beverages and nutritional supplements. These benefits have seen the uptake of seaweed in a wide range of products, with seaweed being called THE food of the future. With the right seaweed, and the right supply, it is easy and convenient to incorporate and benefit from seaweed in your products and processes. Seaweed is part of the massive algal group, and is referred to scientifically as marine macro-algae. The seaweeds are classified as red (Rhodophyta), green (Chlorophyta), and brown (Phaeophyta) groups. We work with seaweeds from each group, as each has clear benefits and distinctions. Whilst, even we, are just saying ‘seaweed’, seaweed is not just seaweed. Globally there are over 10,000 species of seaweed, and so this is a hugely diverse group, both in terms of nutrition and flavours. Importantly, none are toxic, unless they are grown in polluted waters, or harvested and processed poorly. Our accreditation ensures the seaweed we supply is safe for the markets it is going to.
Seaweed is a vastly under-utilised resource, and highly sustainable as it requires no land, freshwater or fertiliser to grow. Some species of seaweed are known to be the fastest growing plants on earth, and are reported to grow up to 2 feet per day! Whilst wild-harvesting has a long and sustainable future, so long as it is done responsibly, the future of certain species and markets is with sophisticated seaweed cultivation (and something Seaweed & Co. are actively involved in cutting edge research on).
The research on seaweed is growing exponentially, highlighting just how little we know of the immense potential of these plants, and which ranges from food, to health and biomedical, to bio-fuels and bio-plastics. No other single group has the potential to address all the ‘mega-trends’ (i.e. the trends that will impact our future at the biggest and most important levels) like seaweed does. It really is remarkable, and if we can ask if you take at least one thing away from this site, even if you dont buy any seaweed, it is to learn more about it and spread the word!
