Our panel of industry leaders and academics have key expertise in seaweed sustainability, aquaculture, quality assurance and nutrition. The platform was established and is run by Dr Craig Rose, Seaweed & Co. Founder, and a marine biologist and entrepreneur with a huge passion for seaweed. Read more about Craig below.
Dr Craig Rose
Craig has worked on seaweed research and commercially for several years, and been involved in broader marine research and industry for over 15 years. In this time, seaweed has proven itself to meet all the requirements Craig looks for – it is economically, socially and environmentally sustainable (when done right!), is extremely good for you, and has huge scope for growth commercially.
Upon finishing his PhD, Craig set up a business offering marine environmental consultancy. After 3 years, he sold the business to a larger consultancy, and was part of the team that conducted a management buy-out. From then the business grew from offices in Newcastle upon Tyne, to have offices in London, Manchester and Singapore. One of Craig’s key projects was managing a large commercial R&D project on seaweed for biofuels. It was during this project he further released the immense potential of seaweed for all the ‘mega-trends’ of food, health and energy provision.
As a result, Craig left the company to focus exclusively on seaweed for food, health and nutrition, and hasn’t looked back.
Craig is on the Management Group of the Scottish Seaweed Industry Association, an advisor to the British Phycolocial Society’s Applied Algae Group, a PhD supervisor at Newcastle University and a guest member of staff, a former director of the ASTEC Aquaculture Centre, and former Executive Director of the Seaweed Health Foundation. Craig also contributes to Doctor Seaweed’s News and Thoughts which aims to inform, educate and intrigue on the immense potential of seaweed.
Craig is actively engaged with industry and the media on seaweed related topics, having talked at several international events, and worked with the BBC, Channel 4 and numerous newspapers and magazines, as well as online media.
